Watch predictions for The Coronation
The Coronation of King Charles III presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to predict which watches prestigious guests are likely to wear to the ceremony at Westminster Abbey and concert at Windsor Castle. DWL‘s very own Danny Shahid anticipates an impressive array of timepieces will be on display:
The King’s personal watch collection features heavy-hitting timepieces from the likes of Patek Philippe and Cartier. However, the King has an affinity for one brand in particular: Parmigiani Fleurier. His Toric Chronograph is most likely the one he will wear over the weekend given its elegant 18kt gold case, stepped coin-edge bezel, elegant guilloche engraved silver dial and dressy aesthetic. It’s a watch he often sports so he’d feel comfortable wearing it on one of the most important days of his life.
The Prince of Wales
Understandably, Prince William has mostly stuck with a rather sentimental option regarding his timepiece of choice. He wears an Omega Seamaster 300m that his late mother Princess Diana gifted to him and has rarely been spotted without it through the years. Prince William wore it at his wedding in 2011 and has always sported it at most other significant royal events.
The Princess of Wales
Much like her husband, Princess Kate is most often spotted wearing only one watch: a Cartier Ballon Bleu ref. W6920071. Measuring only 33mm in diameter, the Ballon Bleu’s distinctive shape, integrated bracelet and understated dial make it the perfect piece to wear to King Charles’ Coronation. Its blued steel hands and blue cabochon match her sapphire engagement ring.
The Prince of Sussex
A middleman between his father’s wide-ranging collection and his brother’s watch monogamy, Prince Harry has been spotted wearing a handful of different watches. The Rolex Explorer I ref. 216570I is his usual watch of choice and seems the most likely option for The Coronation. Owning both the black and white dial, he wore these most often during his time as an Apache helicopter pilot while serving in Afghanistan. Additionally, Prince Harry is regularly spotted wearing a Breitling Aerospace, a watch designed for modern pilots with a suite of functions and a hard-wearing titanium construction.
A proverbial queen of Hollywood, this iconic actress and singer is known for wearing gold watches adorned with diamonds. She has previously auctioned off a gold Cartier La Doña with a diamond-set bezel and a gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual which featured a diamond-set bezel. So an 18kt yellow gold Cartier with a diamond-set dial or bezel, such as the Tank Francaise ref. 2385, seems likely.
Known for performing in dark suits, this famous tenor often goes without a watch. However, he did auction off a 1 of 1 Locman and Oisa timepiece for the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, so perhaps he will wear a model by one of those two Italian watchmakers.
We know the Take That frontman owns a Breguet Classique Retrograde ref. 5207, and such a timepiece would suit this regal occasion. Known as one of the world’s oldest watchmakers with a royal clientele going back centuries, this Breguet’s silver dial and 18kt white gold case fit the part while the black alligator leather strap befits a popstar.
The Voice judge has occasionally been seen wearing something cool like the Maestro 2.0 from Gerald Charles, the brand Gerald Genta founded after selling his eponymous brand ‘Gerald Genta’ to Bvlgari in 2000. Having designed the Patek Philippe Nautilus and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Gerald Genta is one of watchmaking’s biggest names, and the Maestro 2.0 leans on his signature aesthetic with a twist that is fun and unique. Hence, it’s a perfect fit for Olly.
